Makau promotes their assessment engine as “more than multiple choice.” The assessment activities play in Flash, the same platform that supports their custom course shell, the Makau Learning Navigator. By using Flash, Makau’s developers are able to incorporate audio, video, resizable images, and a whole bunch of interactivity into assessments. According to Russ Asplund, Multimedia Manager with Makau Corporation, our goal is to get the learner doing things that help him or her to really learn the information. “We do this by creating a wide variety of quiz and activity options,” said Asplund. “The Assessment Engine creates tests and quizzes that include things like responding to multimedia playback, ordering or categorizing images, creating short answers and hot spot image creation. Each of these various types of assessments link to behind-the-scenes code that allows them to be tracked by a learning management system.” Training designers can even weight questions differently to capture relative importance in the learner’s score. Makau has further enhanced the engine by creating question banks from which questions can be pulled and reordered in a random fashion. Even the order of the answers can be randomized. According to Asplund, the Assessment Engine is designed to be used by content experts, not programmers. A graphical user interface lets the expert write in questions and answers, load images, and even assign hot spots on images. The interface takes care of writing all the back-end data that drives the assessment.
